Q. I went on a hike with my dog and saw a black bear! How can I protect my dog in the spring?

With the return of warmer weather many of us are eager to hit the trails with our canine companions. But before we hit the trails, there are a few things to keep in mind to keep our dogs, and ourselves, safe!

First, have you heard stories of bear sightings on a trail you plan on visiting? If so, probably best to find an alternate path!

Once you found your path keep your dog on a leash. Unleashed dogs can run off towards a bear initiating a chase response that can guide the bear right back to you. If you want to give your dog a little freedom, you can always use a long leash that can be drawn in if need be.

It’s also suggested to stay on the trail, keep an eye out for bear scat or tracks, hike in groups and make some noise.

Most bears will usually keep to themselves, unless they are provoked. Following these tips should warn a bear of you and your dog’s presence. This is what you want! The alternative is surprising a bear which is something you don’t want to do!
