I’m really afraid of bees. I know it’s irrational but I can’t help it. How can I keep bees from stinging?

A. First I’d like to point out that bees perform a very important function – they are important pollinators. Many of our crops are dependent on insect pollination including apples, blueberries, cucumbers, pears, pumpkins, and alfalfa. Bees also pollinate wild plants and gardens contributing to the enjoyment of our surroundings and they help sustain healthy ecosystems too!

Now that you know how important bees are, let’s look at ways you can avoid them!

  1. Avoid wearing smelly scents like perfume, cologne or fragrant soaps as bees can be attracted to these.
  2. Many bee species nest underground so avoid going barefoot so you don’t accidentally step on a nest.
  3. Try and remain calm if a bee is buzzing around you. They tend not to sting unless they are provoked. Do not swat at them but you can move away.
  4. Do not wear bright colours, patterned fabrics or black clothing. Instead opt for lightly coloured clothing.

I hope this summer you can enjoy outside as bees busily transfer pollen from one flower to another!
