Caroline Jacques
Saint-Fabien, Quebec
Caroline Jacques’s artwork has long been informed by her desire to create greater awareness of our natural heritage. Since moving to the lower St. Lawrence region in 2008, she has made the wildlife of the region central to her work on canvas and in schools and community projects. A visit to her website reveals the profundity of that connection. One project that has captured the public’s imagination and inspired many children to get involved is a mural representing the depths of the St. Lawrence River. It is on the walls of Grand-Pavois-de-Sainte-Agnès School in Rimouski. The project, which took three years to complete and involved more than 500 kindergarten to Grade 6 students, presents the biodiversity of the St. Lawrence River and the region’s history, geography and environmental challenges. The mural is not only an inspiration; it is an invaluable teaching tool to help children better understand the river, its many species, and what it will take to keep it healthy.
