Schools Aren’t Only Going Green, They’re Going Blue!

Students at the Chilliwack Education Centre are helping to prevent marine pollution and conserving aquatic habitat.

For the last three years, the Chilliwack Education Centre has been an active member of the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Blue School program. The school’s Coho Riparian Greenbelt Initiative was created to establish riparian greenbelts along the channelized Coho stream that was lost due to agricultural practices.  Students identify salmon stream needs, areas of habitat degradation and select appropriate habitat restoration sites. 

With the help of teachers, students, many volunteers and CWF’s donation, the Chilliwack Education Centre was able to surpass its goal of planting 200 native plants and was also able to inspect other local restoration projects, sample fish values and better understand the necessity of harmonious co-existence between farm owners and their environment.
