This year, the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) will commemorate 50 years of conserving and protecting Canadian wildlife and its habitat. Formed in 1962, the organization, with its unique combination of action, engagement and trusted environmental education, has been at the forefront of Canadian conservation for half a century. And we have you, our supporters, to thank for it.
“Fifty years ago, a small group of dedicated conservationists realized they could accomplish more for wildlife and the environment together than on their own,” says Wade Luzny, Canadian Wildlife Federation CEO and Executive Vice President. “Although CWF has grown hugely since then, we remain true to our founding principles. It is wildlife and the Canadian landscape that has profited from the simple beliefs that every action counts and wildlife deserves a voice.”
CWF remains a vital organization with a mission and purpose that is more relevant today than ever before. This year, it will mark its 50th anniversary by honouring its past and looking ahead to ensure healthy species and spaces for future generations of Canadians. Throughout 2012, CWF will pay tribute to its rich history with a series of activities and events taking place across the country.
“CWF was tackling the issue of pesticides and its harmful effects on wildlife back in 1964, ocean pollution and endangered species in the 1970s and we were urging Canadians to reduce, reuse and recycle long before anyone had ever heard of a blue bin,” says Mr. Luzny. “Every day, CWF and its members make a huge difference for wildlife in Canada. We look forward to continuing that commitment in the next 50 years. Hopefully this anniversary can serve as a reminder that this nation is more vibrant, beautiful and valuable because of our wildlife and sweeping landscapes.”
Our anniversary is more than just a milestone to be marked on a calendar. It’s a celebration that is meant to inspire Canadians to get involved. Taking positive actions for wildlife and the environment is easier than you think. Throughout 2012, as we celebrate our golden anniversary, we will show you just how easy it is to make a difference.
