Background
Brush bundles are stacks of cut undergrowth that vary in size and design, and an effective source of cover for various types of fish. The best place to put them is at the edge of an inside bend in a stream, where waterborne material gets deposited naturally. The bundles will help stabilize the stream's banks, which in turn will help concentrate the flow of water along the outside bend and deepen the channel. You'll have to consult a fisheries biologist about the spacing of the bundles, as it depends on the type of fish in the stream, as well as the amount of existing cover.
Procedure
• Plant three wooden stakes in a triangular configuration at the edge of an inside bend in a stream, about 1 m above the water. The top of the triangle should be against the current.
• Deposit cut brush inside the triangle, with butt ends facing upstream. Lash several butts together with cord and tie them to the upstream stake.
• Tie anchoring cord across the bundle, between the two lower stakes, to bind the whole mass together and provide additional stability.
Maintenance
Check brush bundles regularly for signs of damage.
