The following checklist will help you determine if your municipal dump poses an environmental threat:
- Were geological studies done when the site was chosen to ensure that groundwater wouldn't be polluted?
- Was an engineering study done before the facility was designed to ensure that garbage wouldn't pollute surface or groundwater?
- Is garbage separated into different types at the dump site, with useful materials designated for recycling?
- Can you spot items that aren't being recycled but could be? Make a list of what you see and how it could be used. Present your list to the local council.
- Are hazardous materials like paints and solvents handled separately? Are special measures taken for their safe disposal?
- Is the waste covered with dirt at least every few days?
- Is there an attendant on site to ensure that people dispose of garbage properly?
- Are there nearby streams, lakes, or ponds that could be contaminated?
- Is there a fence surrounding the site to contain blowing trash?
- Are any fires burning on site? Unattended dumps often have fires that release pollutants into the air. Aerosol cans and other materials can explode. Leave the area immediately if you see a fire.
