Protect Your Community's Greenery

Background
Contact your municipal planning department to see if it has rules prohibiting developers from levelling forests, woodlands, and fields. During construction, vegetation is usually removed. With a little care, trees on construction sites can be saved or replanted for the benefit of wildlife and people.

Procedure
If your community doesn't have rules to protect existing vegetation, develop your own and present them to your city council. If a new land development has been approved, you might want to contact the developer yourself and ask what kind of landscaping is planned. Ask if the developer is:

• Taking wildlife into consideration;

• Leaving patches of vegetation for wildlife or planting new ones; and

• Willing to let you contribute to a plan that will protect greenery on the site.
