Start an Arboretum

Background
An arboretum is a garden devoted to trees. Not only is it delightful for humans (especially during a heat wave), it also provides a wonderful selection of food and shelter for countless wild species.

Procedure
Use at least two different species of native trees that appeal to wild animals. Plan to add two or more different tree species every year. Remember to take future growth into account when planting trees and determining how much space to leave between each of them.

Maintenance
• You may want to keep a tree diary. Measure the diameter and height of your trees every year, make observations about seasonal changes, and take notes on the relationships between the trees and the animal life associated with them.

• See "Plant Project Maintenance Tips" for further suggestions.
