Canadian origin:
Alberta to southern Saskatchewan with outlying populations in B.C. and Manitoba
Destination:
Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California
Habitat:
The burrowing owl prefers open, semi-arid grasslands. It is the only known owl species to make its nest underground in abandoned burrows.
Food sources:
Burrowing owls eat mainly insects and some small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and, occasionally, other small birds.
Fun fact:
The species collects mammal waste around its nest to attract dung beetles, a favourite treat.
