A whole sea of opportunities to organize ocean-related events awaits you. Your task is to raise awareness in your school and community about the state of marine environments and to encourage others to care as much about this blue planet as you do. Nowhere is it more important to motivate people to take ocean-friendly action than in inland communities, which are too often unaware of their connection with the sea.

• Persuade your town council to declare Oceans Day.
• Spread the ocean-conservation message among community service groups.
• Create an "Our Town and the Ocean" display at your local library or school, using maps, aerial photos, municipal sewer plans, and river routes to demonstrate how your community is linked with the sea.
• Make posters publicizing the need to protect the marine environment; request permission to post them in your town hall or a community centre.
• Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper expressing your concerns about the ocean and what should be done about them.
• Write a story, poem, play, or puppet show depicting what it’s like to live in the sea, how your community is linked with the ocean, or focusing on a theme, like marine biodiversity or a fish's-eye-view of the ocean; remember to share your creation with other young people and adults.
• Circulate a petition voicing your concerns about a particular ocean problem and suggesting a solution; collect signatures from schoolmates, friends, and neighbours — the more, the better — and send the petition to the prime minister, a member of Parliament, your provincial premier, or another environmental decision-maker.
• Prepare a news release or public service announcement describing your Oceans Day activities; submit it to a local newspaper or radio station.
• Create ocean-action T-shirts with environmental messages; wear them around your school and community or sell them to raise money for a local conservation group that is dedicated to saving our seas.
