About this Poster

With close to 300 butterfly species living in Canada for all or part of their life cycle, it can be tough to know who’s who. CWF’s Wild About Butterflies poster can help you identify some 17 of the more common and colourful species and their caterpillar counterparts.

Relatives and Reputations

Butterflies seem to get all the attention for beauty and grace; however butterflies are very closely related to Moths. While butterflies are associated with sunshine and colour, moths are connected to night and destruction of clothing. This is unfair because they are sometimes hard to tell apart! Learn how most moths are harmless and can quite easily be mistaken as butterflies because of their sometimes vibrant colour.

Before and After

It is important to consider that before a butterfly can spread its wings, its early life form - the caterpillar - must successfully grow and survive. Caterpillars aren’t often given a fair chance, but hopefully you’ll discover the magnificence in these little creatures before they spread their wings.

Attract Them

Gardeners should remember that pesticide use, manicured lawns and exotic vegetation all limit the chances of survival for our native species. By eliminating the use of harsh chemicals and allowing your garden to grow naturally, you can provide a blossoming network for these creatures to flourish in.
