Funded Projects: Mammals

  • Black-footed ferret

    2025-12-05

The Toronto Zoo worked to reintroduce 34 black-footed ferrets back into their native habitat in Grasslands National Park. Afterwards zoo staff visited the site to count, trap and examine the ferrets as a long term strategy to recover the species. CWF assisted over a period of three years in two key components of the release: the monitoring of the ferrets after their release as well as education programming.

  • Blue and Right Whale

    2025-12-05

Researchers Richard Sears and Scott Kraus from the Mingan Island Cetacean Study worked to increase blue and right whale distribution knowledge by conducting a survey of the whales’ population in the Flemish Cap, Grand Banks and across the Laurentian Channel. This study reached as far west as the Gully off the coast of Nova Scotia. In addition to distribution data, the team also collected photos for individual identification, blubber biopsies for genetic and toxin studies, acoustic recordings and attached satellite tags to record movement during migration. The information will assist in identifying areas of critical habitat for these species.

  • Whale, Right

    2025-12-05

Researchers at Dalhousie University have set out to identify critical habitat for the right whale using underwater topography, pre distribution and ocean floor characteristics.. Knowing these factors will help researchers determine where and when Right Whales occupy our eastern waters. The results will allow us to determine how to mitigate human impacts to whales such as shipping lanes and fishing areas.
