B.C. Backyard Oasis
2025-11-24
I started to "Naturescape" about 12 years ago when we bought this house in suburban Chilliwack. I am a country girl at heart, and the daughter of a master gardener, so wildlife and gardening have always been a part of my life. When we moved from farm country, the first thing I noticed beyond the noise was a lack of variety of species, so I decided to amend the situation.

Getting Close to Nature on the Prairies
2025-11-24
Nestled near central Saskatchewan, about 30 kilometres south of Prince Albert, is the property of Lorena Baker and her husband, Ken. What started out as 12 hectares along the South Saskatchewan River later expanded to 77 when they bought the adjacent land. The Bakers’ property, also known as Baker’s Acres, includes wetlands, poplar and mixed bush, an alfalfa field and two small horse pastures of native grasses.

Helping our Planet One Garden at a Time
2025-11-24
Sylvia and I have always been interested in wildlife, nature and gardens. Sylvia was brought up in the great white north of B.C. and spent most of her young days exploring the outdoors with her brothers and sisters, enjoying the nature and wildlife. I was brought up in England, and we had a large country garden that was stocked with a huge variety of both common and rare species. We often had visitors in to see our plants. My father was an influential ornithologist and conservationist, and he instilled the principles of those fields in his children. We loved the outdoors and wildlife, and I especially found huge enjoyment in watching and identifying the birds around me.

Living by the Water
2025-11-24
The beauty and tranquillity of living along water is something that appeals to many of us. What not all people consider, however, is the responsibility of living in harmony with that water, in addition to the land.

The Practical Gardener Goes Wild
2025-11-24
When we bought this fifty-acre farm adjacent to our existing farmland, it was as an extension to our potato growing operation; we certainly did not have wildlife in mind. Much of it was too wet for row crops, with a swampy area in the middle, a spring pond that fed a small year-round stream and another low area that flooded in spring and fall.

Where There’s a Will, There’s a (Natural) Way
2025-11-24
Jade Brown lives in London, Ontario. She’s your typical Canadian living a typical life. She’s also proving that anyone can make a difference. Her garden is just off a busy four-lane street, yet it is also a lush wildlife oasis. As more and more of Canada’s wild areas are turned into subdivisions and shopping malls, wildlife, such as migrating songbirds, are relying more heavily on the average garden to meet their basic needs.
