Q. I keep seeing coyotes in my neighbourhood. Will they hurt my dog?
A. Coyotes are opportunistic eaters, feeding mainly on rabbits, rodents, berries, amphibians, birds and grasshoppers in the spring, summer and fall and on hares, rabbits and deer in the winter.
But, yes, small dogs are sometimes a source of food for coyotes, and larger dogs can even be harmed if a coyote confrontation occurs.
To keep your dog safe from coyotes, follow these tips:
- Keep pet food inside.
- Clean up after your dog so coyotes won’t be attracted to its feces.
- Keep your dog inside at night, as coyotes are typically nocturnal.
- When out for a walk, keep your dog on a leash.
- Don’t leave your pets unsupervised outside.
