Mycosphaera

Fungi are everywhere — beneath our feet, within our forests and at the centre of healthy ecosystems. Yet for decades, they have been largely overlooked in conservation.

Mycosphaera is changing that.

Founded in 2025 as Canada’s first non-profit dedicated exclusively to fungal conservation, Mycosphaera is building the tools needed to bring fungi into real conservation decisions.

Its innovative approach combines rigorous field inventories, genomic sequencing and standardized data collection — transforming observations into reliable evidence that can guide habitat protection.

The results are already revealing how much remains undiscovered.

At the Réserve nationale de faune du Cap-Tourmente and Grande Plée Bleue, Mycosphaera documented 252 fungal taxa, including more than 80 species new to Quebec or to science.

This work is laying the foundation for Canada’s first red list of threatened and vulnerable fungi.

By making the invisible visible, Mycosphaera is redefining what conservation protects — and strengthening the future of the entire web of life.

Congratulations to Mycosphaera,  recipient of the 2026 True North Wildlife Conservation Innovation Award.
