Conservation depends on good science. But science only creates change when people understand it — and act on it.

Award-winning journalist Jenn Thornhill Verma brought that mission to the North Atlantic Right Whale crisis through Entangled, a year-long investigative series for The Globe and Mail.

Her innovative reporting combined powerful character-driven storytelling with rigorous data — more than 50 interviews, over 60 studies and datasets, and records tracking 32 individual whales.

The series featured 23 original data visualizations and created the first interactive Canada-U.S. policy timeline focused on right whale protection.

But Entangled went beyond documenting a crisis. It examined solutions — from fishermen adapting their gear and captains changing routes, to communities developing their own conservation strategies.

By connecting science, policy and the people living closest to the ocean, Verma showed that conservation and healthy communities are not competing goals.

When we understand the problem — and see solutions in action — change becomes possible.
