Canadian Wildlife Federation and Lanark County co-host Native Milkweed Collection and Planting Event

WHEN: Saturday, September 16th from 1:00 - 4:00 PM Remarks to take place from 1:00 1:30 PM followed by a photo opportunity and instructional harvesting and planting session.
WHAT: Join the Canadian Wildlife Federation and partner Lanark County, at the Lanark County municipal office grounds to take part in a hands-on native milkweed seed collection and planting event. This special event will recognize the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s three-year Grow Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in supporting rights-of-way organizations, such as Lanark County, in implementing pollinator friendly approaches to corridor management.
WHY: Attendees will learn the significance of restored meadow habitat, particularly the role of milkweed, the host plant of the iconic monarch butterfly, while collecting and planting native seeds on site.

Action for Pollinators

Bees, flies, butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds and even small mammals are pollinators, meaning they carry pollen on their bodies and move it between flowers. This almost invisible act occurs millions of times each day and creates a third of our food. It also sustains the native plants and habitats on which humans and wildlife depend.

Canadian Seed Strategy Framework

Restoring wildflower meadows requires large quantities of wildflower seeds, sourced as locally as possible. As the desire to restore blooming meadows increases in Canada, so does the demand for native seeds. Currently, the supply of local native seed is out-paced by seeding requirements, and is not consistently available across the country.

Rights-of-Way Habitat Networks

Across North America, pollinator populations are declining and loss of meadow wildflower habitat is a primary reason for this decline. Rights-of-Way (roadsides, utility corridors, solar farms) offer a unique opportunity for supporting pollinators.
