How Will You Help Wildlife? Consider Leaving A Legacy Gift To The Canadian Wildlife Federation

Nov 1, 2024

OTTAWA, Ont. Nov. 1, 2024 - Leaving a gift in your Will is a simple act that can have a powerful impact on conservation. Anyone, regardless of age or wealth can make a legacy gift and make a lasting difference for wildlife in Canada. Here are three questions with Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) Planned Giving Program Manager, Effie Vaicoussis, to help you learn more about leaving a legacy gift to the not-for-profit charitable organization.

1. How will my legacy gift help wildlife in Canada?

Every gift you make to CWF has an impact on conservation in Canada. Your legacy gift provides a source of future funding that ensures CWF can continue to develop and apply long-term and effective solutions to the issues facing wildlife. By leaving a legacy gift to CWF you can help secure a brighter future for wildlife.

2. What are some other ways to give?

Good question! There are many options available. Individuals can leave a gift in a Will through other means such as gifts of RRIF’s, TFSA’s and RRSP’s. Listing CWF as a beneficiary through these means ensures the gift goes directly to our organization without the process of validating a Will.

Gifts of publicly-traded securities is an attractive option for many Canadians and is a smart way to give. A gift of publicly-traded shares, bonds or mutual funds to the Canadian Wildlife Federation will typically result in significant tax savings from the capital gain and you may qualify for a charitable tax receipt based on the asset’s fair market value. We always recommend speaking with a financial advisor to see if this gift method is right for you.

3. I’m interested in leaving a legacy gift to CWF, what should I do?

Talk to your loved ones first. The next step would be to get a Will created. Planning a gift to a charity is a deeply personal decision, and I'm grateful for the candid discussions I've had with our supporters. Getting to know them and hearing stories about their lifelong connections to wildlife and nature is truly inspiring and a constant reminder of why the work we do is so important.
