Highway 407 ETR

CWF is pleased to embark on an important journey to restore critical pollinator habitat in Ontario, in partnership with Highway 407 ETR!

Across North America, pollinator populations are declining, and loss of meadow wildflower habitat is a primary reason for this decline. Rights-of-way (roadsides, utility, and energy corridors) offer a unique opportunity for supporting pollinators. Integrated vegetation management on rights-of-way (ROW) create conditions compatible with native wildflower meadows, which support the Monarch Butterfly and thousands of other pollinator species. Techniques that establish sustainable, pollinator-friendly habitats are also found to be cost-effective over the long term and offer many ecological services.

Highway 407 ETR, the all-electronic open-access toll highway located in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada, which spans 108 kilometers from Burlington in the west to Pickering in the east is committed to protecting and improving Ontario’s natural spaces. Thanks to their support of CWF’s Rights-of-Way as Habitat Program, CWF will be working with municipalities along the monarch butterfly migration route that closely follows the roadway of Highway 407 ETR, to restore native wildflower meadows.

Through this initiative, ROW managers will learn best management practices, shaping the future of roadside management to support recovery of thousands of pollinator species. The leadership and partnership of 407 ETR will help Canada achieve its restoration goals and bend the curve on biodiversity loss in Canada.
